How to Calculate Your Hourly Rate in Kuwait
Kuwait Labour Law No. 6 of 2010 doesn't set salaries by the hour — almost every job is quoted as a fixed monthly salary. But whether you're comparing job offers, checking a freelance rate, working out overtime, or just curious what your time is worth, converting to an hourly figure is simple once you know the standard formula.
📐 Kuwait Hourly Rate Formula
Daily Rate = Monthly Salary ÷ 26 working days
Hourly Rate = Daily Rate ÷ 8 hours
Simplified: Hourly Rate = Monthly Salary ÷ 208
The 26-day divisor is the same standard used across Kuwait Labour Law for overtime pay (Article 67), annual leave encashment (Article 70) and indemnity (Article 51). It represents the average number of actual working days in a month on a 6-day work week, excluding the weekly rest day — even though you're paid for the full calendar month including that rest day.
Why not just divide by 30?
Dividing by 30 calendar days would understate your true daily and hourly rate, since it counts non-working rest days as if they reduced your pay. Kuwait Labour Law specifically excludes rest days from the divisor for exactly this reason — your daily rate should reflect what you actually earn per working day, not per calendar day.
Basic Salary vs Total Salary — Which Should You Use?
This is the most common point of confusion, and the right answer depends on what you're calculating for:
| Purpose | Correct Basis | Notes |
| Indemnity (gratuity) | Basic salary only | Article 51 — allowances excluded |
| Overtime pay | Full remuneration | Basic + regular allowances (Articles 66-68) |
| Annual leave encashment | Basic + allowances (excl. transport) | Article 70 — transport specifically excluded |
| Freelance / contractor rate comparison | Total salary | Most realistic like-for-like comparison |
| General "what's my time worth" | Total salary | Reflects your real take-home value per hour |
⚠️
Use this calculator for estimates only. Which figure your employer legally must use depends on the specific calculation (overtime, indemnity, leave) — always check your contract and Kuwait Labour Law Articles 51, 67 and 70 for the exact basis required in each case.

Hourly Rate & Overtime, Ramadan and Part-Time Work
Your hourly rate is the building block for several other Kuwait Labour Law calculations:
- Overtime pay: Weekday overtime = hourly rate × 1.25. Rest-day overtime = hourly rate × 1.5. Public holiday overtime = hourly rate × 2.0.
- Ramadan hours: Working hours reduce to 6 hours/day (36 hours/week) for Muslim employees, but monthly salary stays the same — effectively raising your real hourly rate for that month.
- Part-time and freelance work: There's no legal minimum hourly rate in Kuwait for private contracts — benchmark against comparable full-time roles and add a premium for lost benefits (leave, indemnity, insurance).
💡
Tip: If you're negotiating a freelance or contract rate, always compare against the total salary hourly figure of an equivalent full-time role, then add 15-30% — a full-time employee's package includes paid leave, indemnity and insurance that a freelancer has to self-fund.
Hourly Rate Kuwait — FAQ
How do I calculate my hourly rate from my Kuwait salary?
▼
Divide your monthly salary by 208 hours (26 working days × 8 hours per day). Formula: Hourly Rate = Monthly Salary ÷ 26 ÷ 8. For example, a KD 500 monthly salary gives an hourly rate of KD 2.404.
Why does Kuwait use 26 working days instead of 30?
▼
Kuwait Labour Law bases salary calculations on actual working days, excluding the weekly rest day. With a 6-day work pattern this averages to 26 working days per month, even though you're still paid for the full calendar month. Some 5-day workweek contracts use 22 working days instead.
Should I use basic salary or total salary to calculate my hourly rate?
▼
It depends on the purpose. Indemnity uses basic salary only. Overtime uses full remuneration (basic plus regular allowances). For freelance or general comparisons, most people use total salary for a realistic hourly figure.
What is a good hourly rate in Kuwait for expats?
▼
Hourly rates vary widely by profession. A KD 500/month salary equals roughly KD 2.4/hour, KD 800/month equals roughly KD 3.85/hour, and KD 1,500/month equals roughly KD 7.2/hour. Skilled professionals often earn KD 10-25+/hour equivalent from total compensation.
How is daily rate different from hourly rate in Kuwait?
▼
Daily rate is your monthly salary divided by 26 working days. Hourly rate divides the daily rate by 8 working hours. Daily rate is used for annual leave encashment and indemnity, while hourly rate is used mainly for overtime and part-time/freelance work.
Does my hourly rate change during Ramadan in Kuwait?
▼
Your monthly salary doesn't change, but working hours legally reduce to 6 hours/day (36 hours/week) for Muslim employees. Since your fixed salary is paid for fewer actual hours worked, your effective hourly rate during Ramadan is technically higher, though not usually recalculated by employers.
How do part-time and freelance workers calculate hourly rates in Kuwait?
▼
Convert a comparable full-time monthly salary using the 208-hour standard, then add a premium of roughly 15-30% to account for the lack of benefits (annual leave, indemnity, health insurance) that full-time employees receive.
Is overtime pay based on basic salary or total salary in Kuwait?
▼
Overtime is calculated on your full monthly remuneration (basic salary plus regular allowances), not basic salary alone, under Articles 66-68 of Kuwait Labour Law. This differs from indemnity, which uses basic salary only.
